What to Expect
Upon receiving your phone call, we will schedule a free orthodontic consultation
When you walk in the door at your first appointment, you will be greeted by our friendly front desk staff and given an iPad/tablet to enter your patient information and medical history. You or your child will then be escorted by our clinical staff to our brushing station and seated for Dr. Meyer to introduce himself and evaluate your needs. We will then bring the parent or guardian in for a thorough discussion about orthodontic treatment. At this appointment, Dr. Meyer will answer 3 simple questions:
Do you or your child need orthodontic treatment or braces?
If so, when? (and for how long?)
How much will it cost?
Of course, there will be a lot more to discuss in terms of the technical side of treatment planning, but basics will be covered, first!
At the end of the consultation, we will typically set up a recall appointment in 6-12 months (if we need more teeth to come in) or we set up the orthodontic records (digital impressions, x-rays, and photos) to begin the process. There is also a third option to simply gather the orthodontic records while you’re here. For this option, we're proud to offer goop-free, full digital impressions with the revolutionary iTero® Element™ Scanner.
In Dr. Meyer’s 15 years of treating patients and their families, families prefer one of two approaches during or following the consultation:
A thoughtful and conservative approach: Go home, talk it over, discuss treatment and finances, and determine if orthodontic treatment is the right course of action for the patient. Orthodontics can be a functionally necessary or largely elective process, so it is important for all parties to be on board prior to beginning treatment. It often makes sense to take some time at the beginning to decide what’s best for your family.
We know we want or need braces approach: “We know 5 families whose braces you’ve done, and we know we want braces. We’d like to get going ASAP. Is it possible to start now?” ABSOLUTELY. This approach is often the case with subsequent kids in the family and families who already know their kids need braces either from their family dentist or pediatric dentist. For this approach, we will also discuss the choice of gathering records during your initial appointment.
